That's the bottom...

Another curious species, but don't become too alarmed at its appearance. You're looking at the bottom here.

I snagged this 2cm specimen one evening while it was clinging to a rock, easily coaxing it into a collecting bowl. Then I had a seriously diffcult time transferring it into a jar, since it has a very strong sucker on its underside, and on the smooth plastic (and the glass of my tank) it can get a tight grip.

Web searches have turned up no species that bears any resemblance, but I could simply be using the wrong terms. One notable trait of this species is that it changes coloration to match background, and while it frequently displays the sandy color seen here, I've also seen it in my tank almost completely black.

When it does swim, it swims quite rapidly, but mostly it prefers to skim from perch to perch on the tank walls. The mouth and head shape seem to clearly indicate it's a bottom feeder.

One evening in the sound, I saw a species of fish that may have been related. The body shape was about the same, but the pectoral fins were more pronounced and the size was well above this one -- about 30cm long, at least 15 wide, very dark in color. I could easily have reached down and grabbed it, but I didn't feel that was the wisest move for a species about which I had no clue.

So, anyone?
