Painfully shy

While it might seem hard to imagine, with the impressive pincers and menacing looks, most crab species are really quite shy, and do everything they can to avoid contact. I haven't been able to get the faintest lead on what species this one is, but they're very prevalent and appear in a wide range of sizes. To get an idea, the shell that this one is lurking within is only about 4 cm (1.5 inches) across in its entirety, and this is far from the smallest I've seen. Some crab species are very fond of hidey-holes like this, not only because they provide protection, but because they catch animal or vegetable matter that the crabs feed upon.

If you look closely you can also see a couple of very small barnacles in the crevasse of the shell, giving an idea of how small they can be, too.
