On a productive photography day right near where I lived, this little Southern Toad (Bufo terrestris) attracted attention by hopping noisily across the path, and it occurred to me I had no good closeups of frogs or toads within my photo stock, especially of eyes. And so a star is born.

Even up close, they appear diseased, but that serves the double purpose of camouflage and looking like they should taste nasty. Their eyes are this bright speckled gold color though, and don't ask me why.

I ended up flat on my belly with the camera braced on the ground and my hand, inches away from my placid subject who cooperated nicely by largely avoiding movement. I believe this is a female, which might explain the cooperation. I hope I got her good side.
